A Trailblazer in Social Reform and Education

Savitribai Phule was a prominent social reformer, poet, and a key figure in India's freedom movement during the 19th century. Educated by her husband, Jyotirao Phule, she bravely challenged the societal expectations of her time. Her lifelong commitment was to empower women and marginalised communities, making her a pioneer of women's education in India.
Pioneering Initiatives and Social Movements
Together with her husband, Savitribai founded India's first school for women in 1848 and later co-founded the Satyashodhak Samaj in 1873 to advocate for social equality. She actively opposed oppressive practises such as child marriage, female infanticide, and the Sati tradition. Additionally, she was a strong proponent for widow remarriage and inter-caste marriages, always striving for a more just and equal society.
Early Life and Partnership for Change
Born on 3 January 1831 in Naigaon, Satara, Maharashtra, Savitribai was the eldest daughter of Lakshmi and Khandoji Neveshe Patil. At just nine years old, she married Jyotirao Phule, who would also become a significant reformer in Maharashtra. Their partnership became a driving force for social progress.
Championing Inclusive Education
Savitribai further demonstrated her dedication to education by appointing India's first Muslim woman teacher, Fatima Begum Sheikh. She and her husband also established educational trusts to support marginalised communities, ensuring that education was accessible to all.
Recognition and Lasting Impact
In 1852, the British government honoured Savitribai as the best teacher for her outstanding contributions to education and society.
Honouring Her Legacy
In recognition of her extraordinary work and the educational opportunities she made possible, a campaign was organised in three settlements: Sahgaadi Masjid, Strand Road, and Kaushal Nagar.

Despite the severe cold, women and young girls attended the gathering to hear the inspiring story of Savitribai Phule.
She remains a model for those striving for education, having also addressed social issues such as child marriage, widow remarriage, and inter-caste marriage. Her relentless efforts, alongside Fatima Begum Sheikh, have left a lasting mark on the country's history, paving the way for every child to pursue education.
An Enduring Inspiration
The story of Savitribai Phule continues to inspire girls and women who face obstacles in their pursuit of knowledge, encouraging them not to give up on their dreams of education.
