Field Report 1: Nature’s Wrath and the Struggle for Rights

1. Gardanibagh: Despair Under the Fallen Tree

The urban poor in Gardanibagh (near Drain No. 21) have been hit by a double tragedy. A massive tree fell onto Lalti Devi’s hut, completely destroying her toilet. Simultaneously, a flying tarpaulin sheet dislodged a brick that struck Usha Devi, causing a severe head injury.
The Voice of the People: "We are being crushed by the government from below and by God from above. We don't even have enough money to pay rent for a decent place to live."
Counsel: I encouraged them to maintain their courage and patience during this crisis and urged them to continue their local livelihoods to sustain themselves.
2. Sipara Chowk: The Value of Labour and the Power of Unity

At the Sipara Railway Line Crossing, I held a vital discussion with local labourers regarding their wages. Despite the government increasing the minimum wage, the workers are being exploited by employers who refuse to pay the legal rate.
The Demand: Labourers insist that the government must take legal action against those who underpay them.
Strategy: I explained that while the government has set the rates, the labourers must now organise. They need to form a committee, fix a unified wage for their work, and collectively boycott those who attempt to hire for less.
The Way Forward: The workers have agreed to unite, enrol in government welfare schemes, and participate in future rallies and meetings to strengthen their collective voice.

Street Vendors' Struggle and the Call to Action
I met with street vendors and stall owners near the New Secretariat on Bailey Road to discuss their legal protections. Currently, these vendors face constant harassment and financial extortion by the Municipal Corporation under the guise of "encirclement/encroachment" drives.
Rights Awareness: I educated the vendors on their rights under the Street Vendors Act and explained how this law is meant to protect their livelihoods.
The Upcoming Meeting: A crucial meeting has been organised for 14/05/2026 to address these grievances and the ongoing exploitation.
Leadership: The meeting will be led by Sister Dorothy Fernandes, Director of Aashray Abhiyan.
Objective: To stand united against the arbitrary fines and harassment by the Municipal Corporation.
The Appeal: I have urged all vendors to attend this meeting to ensure their voices are heard and their rights are secured.
