March for Peace

On March 18, the community members of Aashray Abhiyan, led by Sister Dorothy Fernandes, the Director, and supported by the full strength of the Aashray Abhiyan team held a candlelight march for Peace at the famous Kargil War Memorial.

The unjust and unwarranted war unleashed upon Iran and on the rest of the world by the Presidents of the United States and Israel has brought untold misery and destruction. The fallout of this war has begun to affect the fuel supplies as well as the prices of everyday goods in our own city, and our street vendors and slum communities are already facing hardship.

Our women leaders expressed their dismay, and their solidarity with the widows and the orphans of the war, and held a two minute period of silence to mourn the hundreds of innocent children killed by the warmongers.

Accompanying the marchers were Sister Anu, a social worker  and Sister Cynthia, a high court lawyer. More than twenty-four of our brave women leaders from our focus communities participated.

The March was held despite a tense situation and difficult traffic conditions near the Gandhi maidan, with the spontaneous cooperation of the police officers who were deployed near the Gandhi maidan.  Some passersby and a Sadhu also joined in the march and lit candles.

The entire team of Aashray Abhiyan, including Rajesh, Dilip, Sudanshu, Bittu, Ranjeet, Dharmendra, and the women field staff and Centre staff participated in the function
